Glue Dye, Deep Dye, Chip Dye, Ceramic and Sputter: What Is the Difference?

A practical guide to how common window films are manufactured and why the process affects colour stability, heat control, clarity and durability.

SHORT ANSWER

Window films with similar specifications can be made very differently. Glue dye carries functional materials mainly in adhesive, deep dye introduces colour into polyester, and Chip Dye mixes colour, UV and heat-rejection materials into PET chips before extrusion. Chip Dye alone does not guarantee long-term protection. IrisPro’s patented 6-Layer Hotmelt construction adds two anti-ageing layers and two UV+420 layers to protect its Titanium Ceramic and Chip Dye Carbon functional layers.

Why manufacturing method matters

A dark appearance does not identify the film technology. Manufacturing determines where colour and solar-control materials sit, how the layers manage heat, and how well optical appearance and performance may be retained under long-term sunlight and temperature cycling.

Chip Dye and 6-Layer Hotmelt are different processes

In a standard Chip Dye process, colour pigment, UV absorber and infrared-control material can be mixed into polyester chips, melted and extruded into functional PET film. IrisPro’s patented process goes further: two outer anti-ageing layers protect two UV+420 layers, which protect the Nano Titanium Ceramic heat-rejection material and Chip Dye Carbon colour-pigmentation layer. This protective construction is designed to reduce long-term degradation caused by intense sunlight and heat.

Ceramic and sputter manage solar energy differently

Ceramic constructions commonly absorb selected solar-infrared energy. Sputtered metal layers are designed to reflect a greater share outward. Neither label alone guarantees comfort: compare the complete film, its TSER, visible-light transmission, reflectance, absorptance, glass compatibility and intended use.

Is darker window film always better for heat rejection?

No. Darkness mainly describes visible-light transmission. Heat performance depends on the film’s materials and total solar-energy behaviour.

Is ceramic film always better than dyed film?

Not automatically. Ceramic can offer useful solar control and signal compatibility, but performance varies widely. Compare verified data and suitability rather than the category name alone.

What should I ask before comparing prices?

Ask how the film is made, what wavelength the IRR figure uses, its TSER and VLT, whether the data applies to film-only or film-on-glass, and what warranty supports retained performance.
